Centipede Cunninghamii or Old man weed has been used for thousands and thousands of years by the Australian Aboriginal peoples for use in skin care, wounds, infections, inflammation and sore throats.
It is sometimes called sneezeweed and a lovely little plant it is too. Old man weed grows only in the riparian zones of waterways, lagoons and rivers. We are lucky enough to have an abundance of Old Man Weed growing on the property and we hand harvest and put the lovely plant through our still to extract the essential oil. Traditional methods of use most commonly involve binding leaves of the plant directly to the forehead or other parts of the body, so that body heat may release the plants essential oils which are then absorbed into the skin. The leaves were boiled/soaked in water to create a tea. Old Man weed has a pungent scent, which is pine like and minty. Our Old Man Weed Balm is a wonderful addition to the treatment of dry skin complaints such as psoriasis, excema, chaffing and acne. Use a small amount regularly and consitantly to gain results. It takes a lot of the plant to make a small amount of the Old Man Weed essential oil and the plant is wildcrafted which means if its a dry year there may be little growing to be harvested. We can only gather this herb at certain times of the year if it has been raining. So a regular supply of this Old Man weed essential oil can be a challenge. |
